Porting your barrel allows gas to vent upwards just like a rifle compensator would, allowing for a significant reduction in muzzle rise (between 30% to 70%, depending on how aggressive the selected porting is) this in turn results in greater control over your firearm, faster follow-up shots, and greater accuracy.
